Amy Poehler is taking a stand against the latest trend on social media- "selfies," which are pictures taken of oneself and posted online.
Selfies have become so popular that Oxford Dictionaries unanimously voted it as the 2013 Word of the Year, but Poehler is not as taken with the idea.
"The amount of Instagram selfies seems crazy out-of-control," said the actress while speaking to Paper magazine. "The idea of, 'This is my face and everyone needs to see it all the time,' is so far from the privacy that people used to seek."
Defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website," selfies have been posted by thousands of online users ranging from President Obama to Heidi Klum.
The intense popularity of selfies may have led Poehler to lose interest in social media sites altogether.
"I'm not a real social media person," the actress explained to Paper.
The "Parks and Rec" actress went on to explain that when she was growing up, sharing photos were meant for supplementing memories- not being memories themselves.
"Pictures were an addition to the experience," Poehler explained. "Now the picture is the experience. If I'm hanging out with a friend, and they take a picture of me, it's like, 'Ugh.' I mean, I hate looking at pictures of myself. It immediately takes me out of the experience."
Poehler is not alone in her thinking. Tina Fey, a good friend of Poehler's, also stated disadvantages to Twitter.
"Most people are so [expletive] boring that they should shut up, and you should have to get a license," said the actress in a video and nbsp;posted to YouTube. "Everybody else, go write it in a journal and mail it to your Grandma. Because it's boring. IT'S BORING."
